The Coyotes decided to keep Derek Morris in the fold, giving him a brand new deal that will see him stay in the desert for another four years and is worth $11 million in total, a $2.75 million cap hit each year. This really looks like a good deal, as the Coyotes have a number three defenseman at a pretty reasonable price and he has plenty of upside offensively, which the coaching staff has to like.
In 2010, Morris split time between the Bruins and the Coyotes, having been dealt at the deadline gave the veteran blueliner another opportunity to play in Phoenix and with a team he was already familiar with. Morris played in 75 games between the two teams, picking up 4 goals and 25 assists, which isn't exactly numbers he's used to, but he was still a threat on the power play, which makes him effective.
The Coyotes are inching closer to the salary cap floor with this deal, now sitting at 17 players for $39.4 million. Awfully frugal for a team that finished 4th in the Western Conference. Still, without an actual owner just yet, the team has to keep the reins awfully tight on spending, which will continue for the foreseeable future at least.
