It looks as though the Montreal Canadiens have found themselves a back-up goaltender for Carey Price (who is still an unsigned restricted free agent) for the 2011 season in Alex Auld. Auld signed a 1-year deal with the Canadiens worth $1 million against the cap, helping to keep space open for a new deal with their number one goalie.
Auld played for both the Stars and the Rangers in 2010, appearing in 24 games, having a record of 9-7-3, with no shutouts and 2 assists, giving him 20 pool points on the year. That was good enough for 49th among goalies and might get an improvement playing behind Price in the volatile environment for goalies like Montreal. This could be either a solid step or a step backwards in Auld's career, depending on how he handles the situation himself.
