In a strange deal, which leaves the Sherpa scratching his head, the Canucks dealt Matt Cooke (Box 9) to the Washington Capitals for forward Matt Pettinger (non-pool).
To Washington | Age | Games | Points | Contract (July 1st) |
Matt Cooke, F | 29 | 61 | 16 | UFA |
To Vancouver | ||||
Matt Pettinger, F | 27 | 56 | 7 | 1-year, $900,000 |
Cooke was just fitting in with two of the young guys in Vancouver when this deal has gone down, but since Cooke was becoming an Unrestricted Free Agent, he did seem to be somewhat expendible. Cooke will likely fill the gap that has been left by Chris Clark (Box 19) and his groin injury.
Pettinger, considered to be a bit of an agitator as well, will likely see some early time with Ryan Shannon (non-pool) and Mason Raymond (non-pool), who were the linemate of Cooke before he left.
