An update on Thrashers' goalie Chris Mason came down on Monday morning, as the team has now placed the veteran keeper on the Injured Reserve, stemming from his lower-body injury that he suffered on the weekend. The injury has been reported as a sprained MCL, which could keep Mason out of the Thrashers' line-up anywhere between 2-to-8 weeks, depending on the severity. Since Mason has been placed on the IR, the Thrashers opened up a roster spot and have called up Peter Mannino to back up Ondrej Pavelec.
The 34-year old Mason has seen his productivity levels drop dramatically in the 2011 season, losing out on the number one spot to the younger Pavelec. Mason has only appeared in 19 games for Atlanta, registering a 7-7-2 record with no shutouts or assists, giving him 14 points on the season in the hockey pool. Unfortunately, that's only good enough for 364th in pool rankings, 45th among goalies.
Actually, that does come in okay among back-ups in the overall scheme of things, but since there were only 40 goalies taken in the draft this year, that isn't quite as good. Knowing this all too well in the draft this year is Derek W., who now has another body on the injured list, likely keeping him in the pool basement for a little bit longer.
Derek's goaltending is ranked 19th this season, only 1 point better than Larry D. in the category with 24 points. The pool leader in goalie points through 15 weeks is Dale B., who has 92 points.
