The Predators have decided to extend the contract status of Jerred Smithson on Wednesday, signing him to two more seasons after the conclusion of the 2011 season, taking him through the 2013 season. The deal is reportedly worth $1.6 million, which works out to be an $800,000 cap hit per season, a slight raise over his last contract extension, signed in 2008.
Smithson is not a fantasy-type player, rather a bottom-six checking forward. In th 2011 season, he has played in 42 games with the Predators, scoring 4 goals and adding 4 assists. He is on pace for a career-year, but that really isn't saying too much, scoring-wise.
The Predators do appear to be a budget team from year-to-year, but they are sure stocking up on some great young talent in the coffers. Nevertheless, the regulars that they have signed for the 2012 season are reasonable bargains, having 14 players signed for $34.4 million in total. It's never too early to start looking ahead in the NHL and this appears to be what the Predators are up to. All is well in Nashville, according to their salary cap numbers.
