The first signing of the New Year goes to Pittsburgh, as the Penguins have given rough and tumble defender Deryk Engelland a new 3-year contract extension, said to have an average salary (and cap hit) of $566,666.
Engelland is by no means a real good scoring defenseman, 2 goals and 3 assists in 32 games, but the 28-year old defenseman has found a role with the Penguins, a team that had a massive change-over on the blueline over the last eight months.
This post is mostly for the salary cap implications for the 2012 season, to which this contract extension begins in, and the Penguins are currently sitting with 13 players signed under contract, including six defensemen, at an annual cap hit of $51.2 million. That doesn't leave a lot of scratch for the remaining ten players they have to add on for the maximum 23-man roster, but if you look at the team beyond Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal and Marc-Andre Fleury, you'll see there is a lot of mediocre contracts on the team this season.
