The Capitals have decided to leave Alex Semin back in Washington, as the team goes on a quick road trip down to Florida for two games. Semin suffered a lower-body injury on the weekend after taking a hip check from the Panthers' Steve Bernier and was forced to leave the game. The injury is believed to be a thigh bruise, which likely restricts the Russian winger's ability to skate, so he will likely be re-evaluated when the team returns from their trip near the end of the week. He's considered day-to-day for now.
Semin got off to a rocking start, going well over a point-per-game pace with the Capitals, but has since fallen down to 35 points (18 goals and 17 assists) in 39 games. Semin has been dealing with some injury issues this season, which has led to some consistency issues, including some poor scoring records during the team's dry spell in December. Semin has now dropped down to 55th in pool scoring and is in a spot where he can drop positions fairly quickly, if he doesn't come back from this injury soon.
Semin is the top scorer for Derek W. in the draft and Derek's team is currently sitting in 20th position in the standings, which kind of makes sense in a way. There is a bit of a dogfight in the basement of the pool these days, but it is pretty well-gapped this week, not to mention this injury, so I don't think we'll see Derek climb out of the basement just yet.
