In a season already ripe with growing pains, the Edmonton Oilers have received another hit to their rebuilding year, as Ales Hemsky has now suffered a concussion in Tuesday night's game against the Minnesota Wild. Hemsky left the game with in the 2nd period and did not return and reports came out quickly that the scoring winger was suffering from concussion-like symptoms. Of course, with a concussion, it is really hard to set a definite time frame for a return, but we know he'll be out at least a week, still we'll call it out indefinitely.
It hasn't been the best of years for Hemsky, who already battled through a leg injury and a groin injury, missing 13 games, which has dropped his numbers down to 29 points (9 goals and 20 assists) in 32 games, which is only good enough to be ranked 118th in pool scoring at the end of Tuesday night's play. On a positive note, Hemsky did have an improvement on his 2010 season, where he only played in 22 games and had 22 points. If Hemsky's season was to suddenly end, it would be an improvement. That likely provides poolies and the Oilers with very little solace, but it's something!
Hemsky is now one of two players out for the long-term (in theory, in Hemsky's case) on Chris M.'s 3rd place team, the other being Alex Frolov of the Rangers, who is out for the remainder of the season with a knee problem. This is not adding up very well for Chris, who is being chased down by Benson G. for 3rd place and is trying to keep pace with both Allan S. and the tandem team of Kristy and Don.
When Frolov went down, Chris was only 2 points out of the lead, racing in the neck-and-neck fashion with his two rival teams, but now, a couple weeks later, Chris already finds himself 4 points out of 2nd, 8 points out of 1st and only 16 points ahead of 4th. These will be important points to note, likely when we get to the second waiver draft.
