As it was outlined in the Sheet Player News over the weekend, Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood was going to see a specialist in regards to a groin issue that he has been battling over the last little while. Turns out that his worst fears have been realized and he is actually suffering from a sports hernia, which will require surgery and will keep the veteran goaltender out of game action from 6-to-8 weeks.
Joey MacDonald was called up from the minors on Monday and actually came into the game against the Avalanche the same night, when Jimmy Howard was lifted after four 1st period goals.
Osgood has appeared in 11 games for the Red Wings this season, picking up a winning record of 5-3-2, with no shutouts or assists, which gives him 10 points in pool scoring.
Osgood has now been relegated to being the back-up for a couple seasons now, but he is still proving a competitive service for his team, who his still competitive in front of him, even at age 38. I would imagine that Osgood will try and make his return after this surgery, likely due to the fact that this team has championship potential and another ring is something to work for, even if it is in a support role.
With Howard getting the bulk of the starts, there isn't a great deal of value in Osgood in the draft this year. If he was playing more games as an active back-up, he may have had some value in the second waiver draft, but that will pass him by while he's on the shelf recovering from his injury, so he'll just be left in Box 16 of the selection sheet pool and that'll be it.
