The New York Islanders decided to get into the early signing fever of the New Year by giving a 1-year contract extension to veteran defenseman Milan Jurcina. The extension is reportedly worth $1.6 million, which is a pretty sizable raise from his $1 million cap hit he earned for the current year.
Jurcina isn't really a fantasy pool-type player and his numbers do reflect that for the most part. Missing time this season to a hamstring injury, Jurcina has only played in 19 games, scoring 2 goals and 2 assists. Remarkably, that's already better numbers than what he had in 2010 with the Capitals.
The Islanders are struggling to keep their head above the salary cap floor this season and it really looks like they will be struggling to do the same thing again next season. I currently have 10 Islanders signed on for next season, not including some of the up-and-coming rookies that are signed, but haven't made it yet. Those 10 players and two buyouts come in at $24 million against the cap next season, which it's ceiling has yet to be determined.
