A deal to swap some back-up goalies had some purpose for both teams going forward. The Flames feel that they have upgraded their back-up goaltending situation with the acquisition of Vesa Toskala, who is a former teammate of Miikka Kiprusoff's in their San Jose days. Toskala has picked up a bad reputation from his days in Toronto, but the Flames are curious to see what the chemistry will be like between the two former teammates through the end of the season. If Toskala can pick up his game, the team should be okay.
The Ducks managed to move some potential cap space for some of their deals that they pulled off after the fact of this one, plus they picked up a goaltender who has seen some time with the Flames in Curtis McElhinney. With this deal and the deal with the Maple Leafs to acquire Joey MacDonald (which wasn't posted), gives the team two adequate options to back-up Jonas Hiller down the stretch, who will see the bulk of the starts, as the Ducks try to make the playoffs.
Cap numbers for both teams are explored in further detail in later posts.
