The Penguins didn't have Sergei Gonchar in their line-up on Wednesday night, to add to their recent loss of Evgeni Malkin to a foot injury. Gonchar was held out of the line-up, because he was feeling under the weather and didn't feel like he could go. The situation isn't considered serious and he is expected to be back playing with the team sooner, rather than later, so that is good news for most poolies.
Gonchar was missed by Stuart in the Draft last night, but only in the sense that he's trying to move up a little bit from 12th place in the standings, more than anything. I suppose since Stuart is in the race for the final jersey of the season, that would have some extra meaning as well. Stuart will go into Thursday's action only 9 points back of Larry in the race for the Bruins Winter Classic jersey, with three other teams ahead of him.
Gonchar should also be a major player in the Regular Season Selection Sheet pool, as one of the better Eastern Conference offensive defensemen, he was taken a couple times, but lost a lot of favour in the last couple years to Mike Green of the Capitals.
Finally, with so much talent on Washington and many constraints about how many players you can pick from one team in the Playoff Pool, Gonchar might get a lot of consideration, especially if people go with Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Jose Theodore as their three Capitals. That leaves the door wide open for a lot of Gonchar picks.
