Bruins Extend Ference

The Bruins announced on Wednesday morning that they re-signed veteran defenseman, Andrew Ference, to a new 3-year deal worth $6.75 million over the duration, which works out to be a cap hit of $2.25 million per season. Ference was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent come July 1st, but will now stay with the team for at least another three seasons.

Ference, 31, has dealt with some injury problems over his career, not having played a full 82-game season since 2005-'06 in Calgary. This season with Boston is no different, Ference has only managed to play in 50 games this season, picking up only 8 assists in that time. At the beginning of the week, Ference was ranked 599th in pool scoring with his 8 assists, which is a ways down from last year's ranking. If he could ever get a full season under his belt again, he could be a fine fantasy pool pick-up, but now the risk is too big.

Salary CapThe Bruins are trying to shore up some of their core players these days, having 12 players now signed on for the 2011 season. The cap hit is getting to be a bit big, now sitting at $45.7 million for those 12 players, leaving about $11 million for 11 players, if the salary cap ceiling was to remain the same.
