Well, well, well... look who is in the news for the wrong reasons again. On Monday, Alex Ovechkin was handed another two-game suspension by the NHL for his check from behind on Brian Campbell in the game against the Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon. The league decided that the push that Ovechkin put on Campbell was somewhat reckless and based the suspension on the injury sustained by Campbell, which has been rumoured to be season-ending, likely including the playoffs. The update on Campbell will be out on Tuesday.
Ovechkin goes into his league-imposed break as the league's leading-point getter, which includes pool scoring, with 96 points in 61 games for the Capitals. This is Ovechkin's second two-game suspension this season, also picking one up on a knee-on-knee hit with the Hurricanes' Tim Gleason in November. It definitely won't help Ovechkin's case going forward that he's now considered a repeat offender, especially with any decisions that might come in the future.
Ovechkin might be the best player in the league this season, but that hasn't helped John B. too much in the Draft this season. John goes into Ovechkin's break in 14th spot in the pool standings, with a little bit of potential to move up to 13th spot, but this suspension will put that on hold for the time being.
The two game suspension shouldn't have a big effect on the Sheet pool, as the vast majority has Ovechkin on their side, which was the wise decision over Evgeni Malkin this year.
