3rd Round Draft Pick

The Canucks were in a position to be buyers at the deadline, but in his post-deadline comments, GM Mike Gillis had mentioned how the going rate for the most decent players being sold was a 2nd round draft pick. He did however manage to pick up a big bodied defensive defenseman in Andrew Alberts for a 3rd round pick, which was in the realm of what the team was looking for at the beginning of the day.

Alberts isn't the most offensive defenseman in the league, by any stretch of the imagination, but he does have a pair of goals this season, so he isn't a complete loss there. With an extra year on his deal, he doesn't fit into the rental category for the Canucks, so the team obviously sees some value in keeping him on for another year.

Salary CapSalary cap-wise, the Canucks have plenty of discounts on the go with their injuries and they did manage to trade away Mathieu Schneider to Phoenix earlier in the day, which should actually cover the new cost of Alberts with room to spare. The Canucks don't have any cap worries for the rest of the 2010 season.

In 2011, the addition of Alberts does mean that the team has 14 players signed on for $43.7 million, which is pretty good, but they do have plenty of free agent concerns to deal with, which may complicate things down the line.
