Knee Surgery for Malone

An upper-body injury was keeping Ryan Malone out of the Lightning line-up for the last little while, but it turns out that the veteran forward will be going under the knife because of a knee issue. The knee problem is said to be minor and the surgery will only keep him out of the line-up for a couple of weeks. The Lightning currently sit 6 points out of a playoff spot in 11th place in the East, so it will be a tough ride to make up those points and leapfrog those teams without Malone.

Malone went into Week Twenty-Three on the shelf with his upper-body injury, but otherwise, he's been enjoying a pretty good season with the Lightning. In 65 games, he has 21 goals and 23 assists, which ranks him just below the top 100 in pool scoring, but a layoff like this before the end of the season will likely keep him out of the top 100 at the end of the year.

ImplicationsThis couldn't have come at a worse time for Benson, who continues to battle for some respect in the standings. He's already without Brian Campbell for the stretch drive and now Ryan Malone for the better part of it, so he'll struggle to stay in the race for 5th that he's in at the moment. He can ill-afford to lose anymore people now down the stretch.
