The Philadelphia Flyers have announced on Tuesday that they are now shutting Ray Emery down for the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs. Emery is going to require season-ending hip surgery to further repair a nagging problem that has plagued him all year long. This is increasing the trade scuttlebutt even further, which is very interesting.
After being exiled to Russia for a season, Ray Emery's return wasn't too bad, when he was actually in the crease for the Flyers. He managed to play in 29 contests for the Flyers, going 16-11-1 with 3 shutouts to his name. He also managed to pick up an assist this season as well, which brings his pool points total up to 39, which ranks him 117th among all players in the league. Of course, that ranking will drop due to the lack of time that he'll spend in the net, but at least he showed some progress in his play when he was healthy.
Talking about what he'll give to the Flyers as a salary cap discount from today on, the Flyers will now have about $340,000 made available from today, but that isn't including all the eligible time he has missed thus far. So, we should be able to call it a bit more than that, but the actual number escapes me. The Flyers have been snuggled up to the cap ceiling for a while already this season, so further moves seem improbable unless they are going to move more around.
A dagger to the heart to John P. in the Draft. John hasn't had seen as much of Emery as he would have liked this season, but this is just about it for John and his hopes to make the jump up or to stay out of last place.
