Reports on Tuesday morning are saying that the Atlanta Thrashers have signed Chris Chelios to a new deal. The 48-year old defenseman has been playing with Atlanta's AHL club, the Chicago Wolves all season and has 5 goals and 16 assists in 44 games with the team this season. Chelios is also 2nd on the team in +/- this season with a +35 rating, which is a great sign that his defensive game, albeit in the AHL, hasn't fallen apart.
I haven't seen any financial details, but I would imagine that they are around the league minimum to finish the season.
The Thrashers have plenty of young talent on their blueline, but since they are 11th in the Eastern Conference, so giving Chelios a shot at some more NHL games doesn't sound like the worst idea in the world. If the team has the intention letting Chelios finish off the rest of the season with the Thrashers, I would expect that they are shopping Pavel Kubina, who is an unrestricted free agent this summer, in hopes of picking up more prospects or picks.
