The Ducks are not finished making moves by far, but this one does bring a certain sense of incompletion this summer. The Ducks signed defenseman Steve Montador to a 1-year deal, reportedly worth $900,000, on Friday.
Montador, 28, scored 23 points (8G, 15A) in 73 games last season for the Panthers and brings a stable defender to the mix with some offensive upside. His budget salary should pave the way for one of the more elite salaries to be traded away so more cap space is opened up.
With Montador in the line-up, the Ducks now have 19 players in their mix at a salary cap hit of $55.5 million. This only leaves $1.2 million for four more players, which doesn't seem to bode well for the Anaheim team. Rumours of a big defenseman trade have been floating about for a while, so it really shouldn't come as a big surprise.
The Ducks also signed defenseman Brennan Evans to a 2-year deal. Evans finished a deal in the San Jose system, but hasn't had an NHL game to his credit yet.
