Jason Williams Heads to Atlanta

The Atlanta Thrashers moved a little closer to the NHL salary cap floor on Sunday by signing unrestricted free agent forward, Jason Williams, to a 1-year deal, worth $2.2 million.

Last season, Williams played in only 43 games for the Chicago Blackhawks, scoring 13 goals and adding 23 assists for 36 points. He had suffered a sports hernia and had undergone surgery, which led to him missing most of those games.

For Williams, injuries are a pretty big part of his game, which does lower his pool value overall. He has never played a full 82-game season, he did however play in 80 games for Detroit in 2005/2006. His career-highs came in that season, where he scored 21 goals and added 37 assists. He finished 111th in pool scoring that year.

His $2.2 million deal now brings the Atlanta Thrashers up to $35 million for their returning 21 skaters, see the table below. Still to be signed, goalie Kari Lehtonen, who is looking for a long-term deal and we could likely add one of their top prospects, including Angelo Esposito or Boris Valabik to the mix to bring the team over the cap floor number.
