Islanders Make Streit Signing

The Islanders came out and only made one deal on Tuesday, improving their blueline a great deal with the signing of defenseman, Mark Streit, to a new 5-year deal worth $20.5 million.

Streit enjoyed plenty of success with the Montreal Canadiens last season, scoring 13 goals and adding 49 assists with the team. He enjoyed plenty of his success on the power play, where 7 of his 13 goals came with the man-advantage. Streit's arrival with 62 points means that he will come into next season, barring any more moves up front, being the highest scoring skater on the team from last season. As for pool points, only Rick DiPietro bettered him with 64.

His $4.1 million cap hit will bring the Islanders totals up to $34.6 million for 16 players. The Islanders will have a lot of decisions to make, leading up to the start of training camp, as they will want to fill a lot of their holes with quality players to make a new push for the playoffs.

Saying that Streit will come into next season as the highest scoring skater on the team doesn't bode well for the 30-year old Swiss defender. He did benefit a lot from a good supporting cast in Montreal, so his numbers should diminish drastically and shouldn't be expected to come close to the 60-point plateau during his stay on the island, if things go in the direction they are. It's safe to say that Streit's stock or pool value has dropped significantly with this move.
