Oilers Sign Horcoff to Long Extension

The Oilers looked further towards the future than this coming season with the contract extension of one of their veteran forwards. With such a young team, the Oilers needed to be sure they had some veteran talent to lead them. Shawn Horcoff signed a 6-year, $33 million deal on Wednesday, which puts him in the upper bracket of the team in cap hit.

Horcoff was in the middle of a very good, near a point-per-game production, before a knee injury sidelined him for the final 29 games of the season. When it was all said and done, Horcoff finished with 21 goals and 29 assists in 53 games for Edmonton, which put him 133rd on the pool scoring list. If he was able to finish the final games of the year, he should have finished in the top 50 in pool scoring and the Oilers would have likely been a few steps closer to a playoff spot then.

Unfortunately, Horcoff is slowly becoming an injury liability for the fantasy groups, which does drop his value some. If you're one who avoids players who regularly gets injured, you may want to write Horcoff's name in pencil for this season and pen after next season, if he gets into trouble again.
