Pitkanen Signs in Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed their trade acquisition from yesterday, Joni Pitkanen, to a new 3-year deal, worth $12 million. Pitkanen, acquired from Edmonton for Erik Cole, came over as a restricted free agent and the Hurricanes have obliged kindly. The Hurricanes also signed defenseman Josef Melichar, who spent last season playing in Europe, to a 1-year, $1 million deal.

Only Pitkanen will be included on the new team update posted below, since Melichar will have to work hard enough in camp to get another full-time shot with the Hurricanes this season. With the addtion of Pitkanen, the team now has 16 players signed on for a cap hit of $43.3 million. It leaves them with $13.4 million to pick up 7 more active players. The addition of Melichar would be a very good cost saving manuevre, if they were to make another move for a good free agent.
