First, they decided to keep a couple more of their key players in defenseman, Michal Rozsival, and back-up goalie, Steve Valiquette. Rozsival was re-signed to a 4-year deal, worth $20 million, while the details for the Valiquette deal were not disclosed at the time of the announcement.
Then the team made one of the bigger splashes in the pool, signing defenseman, Wade Redden, to the a 6-year deal worth $39 million, after it was understood that he wouldn't be returning to the Ottawa Senators.
Both Rozsival and Redden finished the regular season with 38 points in 80 games for the Rangers and Sens, respectively, but it looks as though experience could be the major factor as to why Redden earned the far bigger deal.
Forwards | Defense | Goaltenders |
Scott Gomez | Michal Rozsival | Henrik Lundqvist |
Chris Drury | Wade Redden | Steve Valiquette |
Brandon Dubinsky | Dan Girardi
Patrick Rissmiller | Fedor Tyutin
Petr Prucha | Christian Backman
Aaron Voros | Marc Staal | |

With all five signings from yesterday, present and accounted for, the team now has 18 players at a salary cap cost of $44.8 million (without Valiquette's cap hit). The Rangers were also thought to be interested in bringing back Jaromir Jagr at the right price, which they should have plenty of room for later.
