Mike Green Goes Back to Washington

Offer sheet? What offer sheet?

Potential restricted free agent, Mike Green, was saved from all the hoopla of the free agent frenzy hours before it was set to begin. The Washington Capitals ponied up and gave the league's leading goal-scoring defenseman a 4-year deal worth $21 million to retain the working rights of the dynamic duo.

It was the first time since 1993 that a team had the league's leading goal scorers at both forward and defense since Mario Lemieux and Paul Coffey did it for Pittsburgh. Both Alexander Ovechkin and Green will get another four shots at the title now, which has got to excite Caps fans for years to come.

Green finished the season with 18 goals and 38 assists in all 82 games for the Capitals and his potential is still to be reached. This is some pretty attractive stock, especially in keeper leagues, as it's likely still to climb in value.

The signing now gives the Capitals 17 active skaters in the line-up at a cost of $44.2 million against the cap. That still leaves plenty of room to make another significant move or two, so the Capitals can make a better run at the playoffs.
